Together in Service: A Mother and Daughter Making a Lifesaving Difference

In celebration of Red Cross Month and Women’s History Month, we’re shining a spotlight on the generations of women who strengthen their communities through service. Among them is a mother–daughter duo whose shared commitment to helping others has become a family tradition of giving back.

Christy Parker and her daughter, Riley, first discovered their passion for volunteering together at a Sound the Alarm smoke alarm installation event in Delano in Kern County. At the time, they were participating through another organization, but the experience stayed with them.

“We loved it,” Christy said. “As soon as my daughter was old enough to help out, I started including her in volunteer opportunities as I believe there is no greater gift than time.”

That simple act — showing up to help — became the foundation of years of service they would share side by side.

For Christy and Riley, volunteering at Sound the Alarm events is more than installing free smoke alarms. It’s about protecting their community and giving the gift of safety to families who may not know where to begin.

“We both feel it’s important to educate folks on fire safety and enjoy giving the gift of safety at no cost to our community,” Christy explained. “Plus we love being installers!”

Their enthusiasm shines through in every home they visit.

Over the years, Christy and Riley have met countless families whose gratitude reminds them why their work matters. One moment in particular stands out. They visited a community grieving a recent home fire fatality, where no smoke alarms had been present. The loss was still deeply felt.

“These families were devastated and were thankful we could help to make them feel a little safer,” Christy recalled. “Just hearing the relief and appreciation from families that someone cares enough to offer help without expecting something in return means a lot.”

Those conversations, and the reassurance they provide, keep the duo returning year after year.

Beyond the impact on the community, volunteering has shaped Christy and Riley’s relationship in meaningful ways.

“My daughter has such a good heart and I think volunteering with her has taught both of us the value of investing in our community and giving back to others wherever we can,” Christy said.

Their service has become a shared mission — and a way of nurturing values they carry into everyday life.

Working in neighborhoods across their community has shown Christy and Riley one universal truth: every family wants to keep their loved ones safe.

“Everyone wants their family to be safe but might not know the best way to go about it,” Christy said. “Offering kindness and support can go a long way.”

That kindness is exactly what they bring through every doorway.

For families curious about serving together, Christy offers heartfelt encouragement.

“Volunteering is more than checking off a box. The opportunity to help others creates a great sense of appreciation for the family you have,” she shared. “It also teaches your children how to serve others without expectation and to understand the importance of community.”
