Serena’s Volunteerism Spans Across Multiple Continents

“She is the best volunteer and kindest person here,” said Edward Power, a Kern River Valley resident.

Power and the other shelter residents have enjoyed meeting one of American Red Cross’ newest volunteers, Serena, who has been working in the Tehachapi Shelter as a result of the Borel Fire.

Red Cross Volunteer, Serena, speaks to Borel Fire Evacuee, Edward Power.

Serena, whose full name is Pitchayanee Watcharamaleekul, moved to the United States 11 months ago to marry, John, the love of her life. They met while John was on a temporary work assignment in Thailand.

“This is my new world, 11 months in the USA,” she said. A short time, but already making a huge impact.

In Thailand, Serena worked in customer service for a large hotel chain for eight years. She also worked as an Administrator for a Thailand Language School, thus mastering her skill in American Language.

“I am just a girl from another side of the world.” Serena’s pursuit of volunteering spans multiple continents.

Volunteering is not new to Serena. While working in Thailand, she volunteered for the Breast Cancer Foundation, Save the Planet in beach cleanups, and also donated blood on a regular basis.

While she was waiting to obtain the necessary paperwork to apply for employment, Serena decided she wanted to be able to help the people in her new country, which led her to the American Red Cross.

For the last week, she has spent her days volunteering in a shelter supporting Kern River Valley residents displaced by the historic Borel Fire, the single largest wildfire in Kern County history.

Her kindness shines through as she ensures evacuees have a hot meal, comfort items and someone to talk to as they navigate the stressors of the disaster. Her attentiveness to each resident has ensured they felt supported and cared for.

“She is the best volunteer and kindest person here.”

Serena’s story is a great example of the compassionate and driven volunteers who give their time selflessly to make an impact bigger than themselves.
