Ernestine Lewis, a registered nurse for 33 years, retired in March 2023 but wanted to extend her commitment to serving the community by joining the renowned humanitarian organization.
She hopes to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives by joining forces with the American Red Cross. “People at the American Red Cross are caring people who have taken me in with wide open arms,” shared Lewis. “I am a caring person and volunteer to help others.”
With a deep-rooted passion for providing care and support for those in need, Lewis brings a wealth of expertise and a steadfast commitment to the Red Cross. As a volunteer, she will contribute her skills to various initiatives, including disaster response, blood drives, health and safety training, and most recently, at a Sound the Alarm event that focuses on installing free smoke alarms and providing home fire safety information to local neighborhoods.

“When I decided that I was going to volunteer with the Red Cross. I made a decision to join, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do because all my life I’ve always done nursing,” shared Lewis. “Sound the Alarm was a great experience that was different from what I’ve always done.”
Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting the Red Cross’ vital services, which include disaster response, providing comfort to displaced families, teaching life-saving skills or installing smoke alarms. By joining as a volunteer, individuals can directly contribute to the betterment of their communities and provide vital assistance during times of crisis.
“Nurses, like Ernestine Lewis, possess a unique skill set that greatly enhances our ability to deliver essential services,” said Christine Owens, Red Cross Communications Volunteer. “Their knowledge and expertise are invaluable in ensuring the health and well-being of those affected by emergencies. We encourage others to join us, be part of our life-saving mission, and make a tangible impact on the lives of others.”
Whether individuals have a healthcare background or a passion for helping others, the Red Cross welcomes all interested in making a difference. Through volunteering, individuals can gain valuable skills, forge meaningful connections and be part of a network of compassionate individuals dedicated to serving their community.
